Having a fear of dentists is a common problem and can make some patients put off treatment. However, there’s no need to feel nervous about your next appointment. Using sedation dentistry, we can guarantee an experience that is painless and relaxed.
How sedation dentistry can help you
At Dr Richard Clinics, we make sure that you feel as relaxed as possible. However, we understand that for a number of patients, dental appointments can cause anxiety. If you are nervous about an upcoming appointment, please chat to the clinic. We can now provide sedation dentistry to put you at ease. There is no need to be embarrassed discussing your concerns. We recognise that many patients develop a fear of dentists because of previous bad experiences, trauma or sometimes because their teeth are overly sensitive.
It is important not to put off treatment because of fear or anxiety. At regular check-ups, sedation dentists can spot problems like cavities, gum disease and fractures. Left untreated, these issues can worsen and lead to tooth loss and serious damage to the gums.
It can also be useful to take a sedative if you suffer from conditions that cause involuntary physical movements, like Parkinson’s Disease.
What is sedation dentistry?
There are several different types of sedation:
- Nitrous oxide – a sedative that is inhaled
- Sedative medication – this is prescribed by the dentist and you will need to take it several hours before your appointment
- Intravenous sedation – that is administered through an IV drip during treatment
We recommend IV sedation for any patients that are very nervous about treatment.
Preparation for sedation treatment
Please note that prior to any sedation dental treatment, you will need to avoid food and drink for eight hours. Afterwards, you are likely to feel quite groggy and will need to be collected by a family member or friend. You will not be able to drive or work for the rest of the day.
What should you expect from IV sedation?
Intravenous sedation will put you into an extremely relaxed state. Unlike general anaesthetic, you are conscious and able to respond to any instructions from the dentist. However, you will likely have no recollection of the sedation dental treatment once the sedation wears off.
