Dental Crowns Harley Street

As well as veneers, we also offer crowns at our Dr Richard dentistry clinic in London, near Harley Street, W1.

What is a dental crown?

Dental Crowns, which are sometimes called caps, completely cover a tooth, strengthening it and restoring its normal shape and appearance. Crowns are an ideal way to restore teeth that have been broken or have been weakened by decay or a very large filling.

You may need a dental crown to:

  • Cover a misshapen or discoloured tooth
  • Protect a weak tooth
  • Restore a broken or worn tooth
  • Cover a tooth with a large filling
  • Hold a dental bridge in place
  • Cover a dental implant
  • Cover a tooth that’s had a root canal procedure

What kind of dental crowns are on offer?

Crowns are made from a variety of materials with the most popular being porcelain bonded to precious or non-precious materials. A precious or non-precious metal base is made and then porcelain is applied in layers over it.

We offer a choice of materials at our Devonshire Place clinic in London including:

Porcelain crowns: these crowns are made entirely out of porcelain and are not as strong as bonded crowns, but they can look very natural and are most often used for front teeth.

All-ceramic crowns: this modern material is metal free. It can give the strength of a bonded crown and the appearance of a porcelain crown. This makes it suitable for use in all areas of the mouth.

Ultra-high-grade precious full gold crowns: gold is one of the oldest filling materials. Today it is used with other metals to increase its strength, which makes it a very hard-wearing restoration. These crowns are gold in colour.

How long does it take to fit a dental crown?

After your initial consultation, it will normally take two visits to our Dr Richard Clinics in London to fit the crown. We will first prepare the tooth so it is the ideal shape for the crown, and once it’s shaped, the dentist will take an impression (mould) of the prepared tooth, one of the other jaw, and sometimes another to mark the way you bite together. The impressions will then be given to a dental technician, along with details of the shadings use and other information needed for the crown to be made. We will then fit a temporary crown while you wait for the crown to be made, which should take between one and two weeks.
